Cultural Diversity
Diversity is the state of being diverse and difference

Children of all ages are fascinated by the similarities and differences between themselves and others.  Noticing how they are alike or different from other children helps them gain sense of who they are and of the world around them.  The purpose for this unit plan is to familiarize children with cultural diversity.

My personal experience as a teacher allowed me to observe students in their school environment.  One of my observations was about students’ communication skills and how they work together.  Throughout this observation, I realized that most students are confortable communication, working and playing with others who are like them.  They create little groups amongst themselves and form “clicks”.  These stereotypes are very present throughout every grade level, thus making them hard to break.   Canada is considered a multicultural country; therefore, how is multicultural reflected in the classrooms?  Do children really communicate, learn and educate each other?

I created a unit plan intended to promote cultural diversity in our schools in order for students to interact more with one another.  My goal is to make the students aware of how cultural diversity is expanding throughout society.

Throughout this unit, students will use different media technology, such as smart boards, computers and art work, to define and analyse cultural diversity.  They will observe how diversity is changing and will reflect upon what is needed in order to promote cultural diversity in their community.   These lessons and activities will encourage students to reflect on the evolution of different individuals in their school and community.  Lastly, the students will be graded on different types of assessment; the biggest one being a collage.
