Introduction:
- Start the class by having a class discussion about different types of foods.
- Ask the children to name and describe their favourite type of food and their least favourite type.
- Teacher must write all the students’ answers on the Smart Board.
- Ask the students if they think food can relate to cultural diversity. Why or why not?
- Teacher, do not erase the answers, leave them on the board.
- Tell the students that today, they will be looking at the connection between foods and cultural diversity.
Development:
- Read Treasure for lunch by Nanji, to the students.
- This children’s book is about a Grandmother sending Shaira to school with some
tasty goodies for lunch; however Shaira is ashamed to eat them in front of her
friends. She manages to find interesting ways to bury the bhajias and the kebabs
from her lunch as it is wintertime and there are many good hiding places in the
snow. Shaira’s secret is safe until the snow begins to melt and her buried
treasure is exposed!
- Discuss the story.
- What is it saying?
- What is the author trying to tell the audience?
- Discuss cultural diversity and food.
- Does this story relate to cultural diversity? If so, how?
Conclusion:
- Students must write a journal entry about food and its connections to cultural diversity.
- Inform the students that the next lesson the class will be turned into a food fieta. The students must then bring a food, related to their origin or tradition, for next class.
