Hello teachers,
Society, school, and classrooms are becoming more and more diverse. People are different and act differently, therefore how can we all relate to one another?
I have created a unit plan desired to foster cultural diversity in school environments. This unit is designed for teachers who want to promote Cultural Diversity, as well as cultural awareness amongst students, in their schools. The unit contains ten lessons which provide teachers with diverse themes, lessons, and materials to implement in their classrooms. These lessons and activities will encourage students to reflect on the evolution of different individuals in their school and community. Throughout this unit, students will define and analyze diversity through the use of different media such as interviews, survey questions, and bloging. They will also make a collage, about how they perceive diversity. These ten lessons tie into the Quebec Education Program. They are cross-curricular and relate to the subject competencies, such as Language Arts, Moral Education, and Social Sciences; as well as to the Broad Areas of Learning, such as Media Literacy, and Citizenship and Community Life.
This unit plan was designed for a middle-upper class socioeconomic status school. It is an average school with about 400 students. The school has a budget to fund several resources, such as computers and Smart Boards for their students and teachers. The population of the school and community is starting to become quiet diverse in terms of ethnicity. Overall, the unit was set up for cycle three, grade six students.
Enjoy.
